Sickle Cell Foundation


Sickle cell disease is a hereditary blood disorder. In Nigeria today over 150000 children are born each year with the disorder ,while over 40million Nigerians are leaving with the haemoglobin AS gene. due to the abnormalities within the red cell a myriad of complications arise and affects all systems within the body. For instance patients with sickle cell are at risk of strokes, kidney disease,

acute chest syndrome,  liver diseases, priapism e.t.c.

The Sickle cell foundation Nigeria
is a NGO aimed at providing succour for patients with this disease by use of research , investigations and treatments to reduce and alleviate the symptoms of the disease.  services provided by us include transcranial doppler (which is a stroke prevention method), dedicated leg ulcer clinic,  prenatal diagnosis ( which detects the genotype of foetus), world standard DNA laboratory,  bone marrow transplant ( total cure of the disease), dedicated sickle cell clinics around the country, genetic counselling.
